When the Food and Drug Administration in Silver Spring, Maryland wanted to maximize their initiatives to construct a combined heat and power plant, TEI Electrical Solutions (TEI) and Honeywell were selected as the strategic partners to help get the job done! This project is critical to the FDA campus’ 24/7 need for emergency power.
Construction Experience
The contract included the installation of a 12.5 MW generator plant consisting of five generators, parallel switch gear, and transfer switches. The description of work completed by TEI entailed: underground duct banks, interior GRC feeder conduit, primary cable feeders and termination, provided and installed generators, and transfer switches.
Project Details
The work was especially challenging given the harsh winter conditions and the major difficulties installing the duct banks in frozen ground. TEI’s innovative process used pre-fabricated materials to build the duct banks due to winter conditions. Another challenge for this project was the ongoing coordination for all power outages with many agencies on campus while keeping the FDA up and running.
Steve Losin, Project Engineer for Honeywell Energy Services Group, commented on the importance of collaboration, “Communication between Honeywell & TEI was instrumental in the success of this project for the FDA. Difficult site conditions and frigid temperatures while installing 1700′ of duct bank did not slow [TEI’s] team down as they kept to the agreed schedule and finished on time while maintaining the highest level of safety that we expect on our job-sites.”
